Yonkers is the fourth largest city in New York State, with a population of nearly 200,000 individuals. The diversity of their talents and cultures is one of our major strengths.
We are the largest city in Westchester County and next-door neighbor to the City of New York. We are well served by major roadways and public transportation. We have been undergoing extraordinary economic growth with a number of thriving commercial corridors, the revival of our incomparable Hudson River waterfront, and the addition of thousands of new jobs and more than $800 million in new development over the past eight years. And there’s much more to come.
Yonkers offers excellent amenities that enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages—from sand boxes to senior citizen centers. We have more than 100 parks and playgrounds, a new state-of-the-art downtown waterfront library (as well as two other branches), hundreds of recreational programs, cultural organizations, centers for senior citizens, a museum and planetarium, a magnificently restored performing arts center, historic sites and excellent hospitals.
Our school system, which serves almost 27,000 students, includes 24 elementary, four junior high and four senior high schools, including schools that earned the Blue Ribbon designation from the U. S. Department of Education. The NYS Commissioner of Education commended the Yonkers Board of Education for having achieved the most significant improvement in statewide testing results of any school district in the state. That is a statistic we will improve upon even further in the coming year. In addition to our public school systems, many private schools and institutions of higher learning operate within our borders.
Yonkers is a large city that maintains a number of “small town” assets. Some 38 distinct neighborhoods contribute to our cultural richness and provide a sense of community. Our housing opportunities range from the affordable to the extravagant, and Yonkers residents are always ready to extend a warm welcome or a helping hand to their neighbors.
