About The Port Authority
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a bi-state public agency operating some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the New York / New Jersey region including The Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation (PATH), the primary transit link between Manhattan and New Jersey communities and suburban commuter railroads.
Responsibilities
Electricians perform journey-level installation, maintenance, and repair of various electrical equipment, such as: generators, motors, fire alarm systems, toll equipment, traffic signals, control boxes and automatic electrical systems. Electricians work from schematic drawings, blueprints or rough sketches and may splice cables, install conduit, BX cable and similar types of electrical wiring. Electricians are required to work at elevated heights from ladders and bucket trucks and may lead one or more electrical helpers.

Electricians work a 40-hour week, which includes working rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Electricians work at our various Port Authority facilities throughout the NY/NJ area.
Qualifications
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must present the following qualifications in order to be considered:

*High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution
*Three to five years journey-level commercial electrical work experience
*Valid Driver's License
*Applicants must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brakes endorsement or higher. Applicants without a Class B CDL must obtain a Class B CDL Permit with endorsement before their first day of work, and will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with one endorsement within three months of employment. The ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications profile:

*Must be able to troubleshoot, diagnose repair and install motors, lighting systems, controllers, cables, conduit, etc.
*Skilled in working with High Voltage electrical systems
*Knowledge of state and local electrical codes

Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a written test that will measure
a candidate's knowledge in areas such as:

*Electrical Theory
*Electrical Codes and Safety
*Motors and Controls
*Electrical Equipment
*Troubleshooting and Repair
*Trade Mathematics

Candidates who qualify on the written exam will be eligible to be considered for the next step in the evaluation process, a practical exam.

The Electrician practical exam will measure the candidate's knowledge, skill and ability to work with tools, equipment, and materials used in Electrical system maintenance and repair demonstrating professional trade practices for this job level. The practical test includes hands-on problems such as:

*Working at Heights: Tests your ability to work from a bucket truck at various heights.
*Motor & Motor Controls: Is the complete wiring and installation of a 3-phase motor and a start/stop station so that the motor operates from two locations. You will be required to draw a line diagram and wire the motor from this diagram.
*Alarm Panel Wiring: An alarm panel and a number of perimeter devices are to be wired according to specifications.
*Installation of a 3 way / 4 way Lighting Circuit: You must completely wire up a 3 way / 4 way lighting circuit including the mounting of service boxes, lamps and switches in accordance with NEC guidelines.
*EMT Bending: You will be given one 10 ft. length of EMT conduit and a drawing. You will bend and mount the conduit to a wall and into service boxes.

A $25 non-refundable/non-transferable testing fee payable by MasterCard, Visa or a pre-paid credit card is required for the written test. The testing fee will be waived for qualified candidates receiving certain forms of public assistance who submit the required documentation.

Selected candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and will be asked to provide copies of the required licenses for verification.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package (subject to collective bargaining agreement) and a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement.

Salary: $25.08 hourly (subject to collective bargaining agreement)
