Overview

ABOUT THE POSITION

Senior Urban Planner | New York City Metro

VHB, a nationally recognized integrated planning, design, environmental, and engineering firm, has an immediate need for a Senior Planner in our New York metro region (New York City, Long Island, lower Hudson Valley, and New Jersey). The ideal candidate is a highly talented, energetic, and creative individual with a desire to work in a collaborative, close-knit professional environment.

Responsibilities

    Grow the planning practice in the Northeast/New York metro region and mentor staff.
  • Lead business development activities, including developing and networking with clients, preparing planning strategies for proposals and contracts, and supporting regional market leaders in the real estate, institutional, state and local government, transportation, and energy markets.
  • Develop project strategies and lead preparation of development applications and planning documents for public and private sector projects.
  • Research, interpret, and draft zoning and land use regulations, comprehensive plans, community profiles and demographics, and related information.
  • Analyze data and develop visualizations and graphics to help communicate planning concepts.
  • Prepare written planning documents, including graphics, maps, and diagrams; summarize information collected by others; and assemble reports.
  • Lead community engagement efforts, including materials for community involvement activities, presenting materials at public meetings and workshops, and collecting and interpreting community feedback to inform action.
  • Interact with VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience in innovative technology enabled planning, including social equity, sustainability, climate action/adaptation planning, Net Zero Energy, Net Zero Waste, smart growth, and planning for public health.
  • Experience working with an integrated team of planners, traffic and civil engineers, and environmental specialists.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and interact with clients and staff.
  • Confidence in public speaking before layperson, stakeholders, and teaming partners.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of data analysis tools such as ArcGIS and Excel; ability to make maps with GIS, Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch-up, CAD and/or other graphic software.
  • Statistical analysis experience a plus, but not required.
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, InDesign, Excel, and other production software.

Qualifications

  • 11-15 years of professional planning experience required
  • 3 years of planning experience with a private consulting firm preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Urban Design/Studies or related field
  • Master's degree preferred (may substitute for 1 year of experience)
  • Experience with business development and preparing winning proposals required
  • Experience with planning and design in the New York metro region (New York City, Long Island, lower Hudson Valley, and New Jersey) required
  • Leadership skills and experience managing/mentoring staff
  • AICP certification is a plus

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New York City, NY is $126,000 to $180,000 and Hauppauge, NY is 120,000 to 170,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
