The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Columbia University School of General Studies (GS) is the finest liberal arts college in the United States dedicated to making Ivy League education accessible to nontraditional students. GS was founded in 1947 on the mission of expanding access to elite higher education, and it remains the most diverse college in the Ivy League, with many transfer, first-generation, and international students. GS students are fully integrated with Columbia's broader undergraduate population and are taught by Columbia's celebrated faculty.

Responsibilities

The Student Life Coordinator has a significant role in key sectors of GS Student Life, working with staff and students to support and extend the excellence of undergraduate education at Columbia. The Student Life Coordinator's responsibilities will focus on three key areas:

Event Planning: Organize events both on and off campus for GS Student Life, the Dean of Students Office, Postbac Premedical Office, GS Academic Affairs, and all other offices and departments at GS. Collaborate with GS Staff as well as offices throughout the university on the execution of New Student Orientation, GS Class Day, and all Academic Award Ceremonies. Support the planning and implementation of all events. This includes, but is not limited to working with vendors, reviewing contracts, promotion, catering and working with other offices at Columbia. Maintain a calendar of events. Attend events as needed. Enter events into the Columbia events management system (Bedework).

Budget Responsibilities: Manage a timely payment process for all accounts overseen by GS Student Life. Maintain a spreadsheet for the various accounts. Manage order, payment, and reconciliation process for Columbia Purchasing Credit Card (P-Card). Student Group Support: assist groups advised by the Student Life team with payment processing.

Administrative Support: Coordinate space usage and manage upkeep for the GS Student Lounge. Manages the GS Student lockers in Lerner Hall. Maintain an inventory of all collateral materials, order supplies, convey routine and complex information on Columbia University policies and procedures, and address problems for students. Answer telephones involving screening and/or high volume, screen and/or direct visitors; manage administrative spaces and office calendars; maintain the schedules of the Student Life Team. Provides production support; produces mailing lists and labels for seasonal projects, assists with event planning, corresponds with students via email, provides data entry support to Student Life and the Dean of Students Office; and picks up and distributes office mail. Handles deliveries and runs errands. Assist the Student Life team with any reports.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School or the equivalent is required. Receptionist, data entry, and PC experience required. Some college preferred. Two years' related experience is required. Experience and familiarity with Columbia University's Student Information System (SIS) are preferred. Ability to handle a variety of simultaneous activities, attention to detail, and ability to follow through is a must. Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required. Familiarity with Columbia University and the policies of the School of General Studies is highly desirable.
