Job Description

A Research Investigator position is available within the Scent R&D division at one of the world's best fragrance and flavor companies. This New Jersey based position is one that offers the ability to practice state of the art green and sustainable catalysis for the discovery of scent molecules and/or materials, drive molecule discovery innovation and reaction technology development (new capabilities), contribute to process innovation, and be a key contributor to IFF's portfolio transformation to market leading eco-friendly and sustainable ingredients

About You:


You will have a background and PhD in organic synthesis (ligand / catalyst design and synthesis, catalytic method development, total synthesis) with 0-3 years' experience. Chemical Engineers with an emphasis on organic reaction technology to develop sustainable feedstocks will also be considered.

Basic working knowledge of computational modelling a plus.

You will spend your time:

  • Conducting technical bench experiments
  • Discovering and developing catalytic conversions toward renewable and eco-friendly unique Scent ingredients.
  • Planning and carrying out challenging technical projects, propose new catalyst and process innovation projects, and serve as a consultant to the business functions for technical support.
  • Analyzing data, accurately documenting experimenting, and proposing next steps.
  • Lab scale catalyst development, catalyst scale-up, and technology implementation.
  • Supporting exchange of know-how and experience of catalysis in the global innovation community of IFF.
  • Initiating external collaboration or consultancies
  • Acting as functional representative on project team/managing project areas
  • Travel assignments: You will be willing to travel to work at IFF international research sites for extended periods of time following training in Union Beach, NJ.
Job Requirements

Required Experience:

  • Ph.D. in relevant area of organic synthesis (ligand / catalyst design and synthesis, catalytic method development, total synthesis) or chemical engineering (with an emphasis on reaction technology to develop sustainable feedstocks) with 0-3 years' experience
  • Postdoctoral study and international exposure considered as pluses.

Experience in several of the following areas of specific interest:

  • In-depth knowledge and expertise in synthetic chemistry and heterogeneous / homogeneous catalysis
  • Hands-on experience in catalyst preparation and evaluation
  • Knowledge of reaction engineering, kinetics and modeling
  • A good understanding of experimental design (DOE)
  • Demonstrate a high level of creativity and personal initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Research experience in organic synthesis is required
  • 3+ years industrial experiences in catalysis research and development
  • Experience driving innovation using external resources
