HDR is seeking to hire a mid-level Environmental Scientist to join our growing New York/ New Jersey Environmental Science and Planning practice. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design, collection and implementation of environmental field studies including the collection of water quality and fisheries data for regulatory compliance as well as experience in environmental permitting, report writing, and experience working with or for state and federal regulatory agencies. The candidate must be a well-rounded, team-oriented individual with excellent communication skills who is capable of coordinating and working on multiple projects and leading individual components of large multidisciplinary programs. Individuals who have succeeded in this position are self-motivated and possess versatility, a willingness to fully engage in a variety of tasks, effective time management and excellent technical writing skills.

Working under the supervision of senior staff, and working closely with HDR's Environmental Measurements Lab located in Nanuet, New York, the successful candidate will be responsible for over-seeing and implementing various regulatory compliance field sampling and laboratory programs. In addition, the candidate will work regularly in an office desktop environment preparing scientific reports, compliance monitoring documentation, analyzing data as well as preparing permit applications, NEPA documentation, biological assessments, and performing administrative duties associated with project management, including implementing QA/QC program policies, note taking and tracking action items discussed at project team meetings to help assure project completion on time and within budget.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and assist in implement environmental field studies including the collection of water quality and fisheries data for regulatory compliance
  • Prepare environmental reports including data analysis, biological assessments, compliance monitoring reports, mitigation plans, and permit applications as needed
  • Prepare and review technical sections of environmental impact statements (EIS), environmental assessments (EA), natural and cultural resource reports, and other environmental documents
  • Support HDR's Environmental Measures Lab by providing guidance on field and laboratory collection methods including in field over-sight of their programs and leading field teams as required
  • Prepare and present technical presentations to HDR staff, clients, resource agencies and at public information meetings, technical workshops and conferences
  • Project management, including preparing and managing scopes of work, budgets, schedules, and issue resolution; manage and deliver several projects concurrently
  • Support other project managers across market sectors and disciplines in completing required studies, documents and reports
  • Support marketing needs, including client development and strategies to expand our environmental practice in the northeast
  • Establish client relations and be involved with marketing, contractual, design and production meetings

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years' experience working within the industry in a related field
  • Proficiency in R Programming, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe or Bluebeam editing as well as excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Problem solving, troubleshooting, and teamwork skills gained from working in the field or environmental studies settings
  • Comfort in working over water and safely operating small boats and watercraft
  • Comfort working outside in adverse field conditions, carrying and operating heavy equipment and working long hours and weekends as required
  • Knowledge and experience working in a biological laboratory setting including the ability to identify early life history (eggs and larvae) of coastal and freshwater fish species
  • Desire to be part of a team of passionate scientists and engineers tasked with growing HDR's environmental sciences and fisheries program in the northeast
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Additional Bonus Qualifications

  • Certified SCUBA or snorkeling experience
  • Knowledge of freshwater mussels and/or oyster restoration and aquaculture
  • Lab processing of fish specimens for demographics, otoliths, and genetic sampling
  • eDNA experience
  • Statistical analyses and knowledge of fish population models, or fisheries management plans and commercial/recreational fisheries impact assessments for offshore renewable energy projects
