Job Description

Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine,Bus Drivers drive full-sized passenger buses on state facility grounds or over the road. Incumbents may post manifests and other records of goods and people transported in order to document safe delivery. They are responsible for the welfare and safety of their bus and passengers while on duty.

Duties of a Bus Driver may include the following but are not limited to:

Drives a full-sized passenger bus both on and off State property in order to transport people and material as required.
  • May map routes, itineraries, and points of call.
  • Supervises or personally performs the loading or unloading of personal property on buses.
  • Posts manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and people transported.
  • Keeps a written record of trips, mileages, stopovers, purchases of gasoline, oil and other materials, as well as bridge and road tolls.
  • Reports apparent major malfunctions and needed repairs to appropriate supervisory or maintenance staff.
Performs routine maintenance of passenger buses to ensure that personnel and material are moved as required.
  • Washes and cleans vehicles.
  • Changes tires and inflates to proper pressures.
  • Replaces windshield wiper blades.
  • Checks adequacy of appropriate fluid levels for radiator, battery, and crankcase. Adds fluids as appropriate.
  • Checks horn, directional lights, head, tail, parking, and emergency lights for proper operation. Replaces fuses or bulbs as appropriate.
  • Checks proper operation of braking system. May add fluid to master cylinder as needed.
May operate communication equipment to monitor road, weather, and traffic conditions to insure safe and timely travel.

Other duties associated with this title:
  • Drive Mammography Mobile to Host sites. Flexible schedule of days and hours as required to accommodate travel time to and from sites.
  • Site visits to ensure adequate facilities and safety. May map routes, itineraries, and points of call.
  • Maintains log of required maintenance, mileage, and fueling. Moves or carries cargo onto, into, off of, or out of the vehicle operated.
  • Moves or caries cargo from the vehicle to the delivery or storage point.
  • Must adhere to and maintain manufacturer required maintenance schedule and deliver vehicle for such by working with the program coordinators and maintaining accurate records. Will also collaborate on vehicle appearance maintenance requirements.
  • Operate and maintain vehicle, including fueling, recommended service, and daily inspection checklist.
Qualifications

Required:Candidates must possess a valid Class B New York State driver license. Candidates must have passenger endorsement on their license.
  • Working knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of vehicles operated.
  • Working knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Working knowledge of routes to specific locations normally visited.
  • Ability to physically operate assigned vehicles safely and effectively under various road conditions.
  • Ability to plan routes to specific locations and to properly estimate time required to reach the locations.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on vehicles operated.
  • Ability to communicate orally for the purpose of exchanging information.
Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Customer Service experience.
  • High School Diploma.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen*
  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
