Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Instructional Support Assistant (Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT) eligible according to NYSED) is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population. Incumbent must be thoroughly familiar with, understand and be able to follow all prescribed policies, protocols, procedures and methodologies as utilized in the section to which he/she is assigned.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.


Please be advised this is a temporary position for 6 months to 1 year. The work schedule is a full time shift, with weekends and holiday rotation.


Duties of a Temporary TH Instructional Support Assistant - CLT Eligible may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Perform SARS-CoVID-19 testing using both manual and automated methods.
  • Perform high complexity Molecular Diagnostic testing using both manual and automated methods. (COVID-19 testing only)
  • Perform assays consisting of multiple dilutions requiring impeccable technique. (COVID-19 testing only)
  • Line responsibility for the performance of clinical analysis in the Department of Laboratories. (COVID-19 testing only)
  • Perform routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as assigned according to established protocols to ensure proper instrument performance. (COVID-19 testing only)
  • Preanalytical duties
    • Organize specimens for testing and storage after the test is completed.
    • General lab maintenance (i.e. inventory, stocking shelves, recording temperatures).
    • Transporting specimens and assembling kits.
  • Adhere to all quality control policies and procedures.
  • Proficient in computer protocols as assigned.
  • Adhere to all SBUH and departmental policies and protocols.
  • Interact professionally with nursing staff, physicians, support staff, peers, patients, and other members of the hospital community.
  • Will maintain safe laboratory practices under the direction of Associate Technical Director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory and the Laboratory Director.
  • Answer phone, assist as needed.
  • Perform other clerical duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Individual to meet federal requirements to perform high complexity testing (COVID-19 testing only).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or Biological Science or Life Science.
  • Eligibility for NYS License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

Preferred:

  • ASCP or Molecular certification.
  • Molecular Biology experience, electrophoresis, PCR, real-time PCR, sequencing.
  • Microbiology experience.

The candidate is expected to apply for and obtain NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist License. Once licensed, the temporary TH Instructional Support Assistant incumbent will be eligible to be promoted to a temporary TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist IV position.

Once Executive Order on COVID-19 testing expires, appointee will perform non-testing duties in job description during appointment.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen*
  • Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
