ROLE DESCRIPTION:

Lead I&C Engineer will report to the Director of I&C Design Engineering and be responsible for a wide variety of I&C systems design, commissioning, start-up and field support activities. This position will require frequent travel to Covanta's facilities to support upgrades and troubleshooting of plant control systems.

Key responsibilities, deliverables, and expectations:

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the ongoing technical needs of a fleet of forty (40) operating Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities. Responsibilities will include coordinating all activities in executing control system upgrades, replacing obsolete systems, as well as in investigating, troubleshooting and solving a wide variety of controls engineering hardware and software issues. Travel will be approximately 50%.
  • Providing I&C engineering review and guidance to new facility design and construction efforts. Responsibilities will include interfacing closely with third party engineering firms in developing and reviewing P&IDs, control system architecture, and systems and instrument specifications. Additionally, the position will be responsible for providing field construction support, instrumentation installation compliance, as well as start-up and commissioning support of Process Control Systems.
  • Leverage outside engineering firms to support and supplement projects and design initiatives.

In all areas, the successful candidate will coordinate and lead all efforts to ensure that projects are properly designed, managed, and installed to comply with all specifications and facility requirements and to ensure that they are completed on time and on budget. A strong emphasis on process controls innovation, incorporating plant automation strategies for the purpose of improving plant operations and reducing costs are highly desired for this position.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (Electrical Engineering or related), from an accredited institution is required.

Experience:

Necessary skills and experience for this position include:

  • Ability to work in an industrial power generation environment.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in the design of I&C systems for power plants with a focus on system modifications and replacements at existing facilities.
  • Experience and proficiency with specification of power plant field instrumentation.
  • Experience and proficiency generating and working with P&ID's and control logic descriptions.
  • Understanding of ISA Standards and Recommended Practices, SAMA analog logics, ISA digital logics, power plant control system design.
  • Experience and proficiency in programming of DCS, PLC and PC based SCADA systems including HMI development and configuration. Should be a system expert in at least one major DCS and PLC system.
  • Knowledge of Python and Java a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills - ability to focus on important information without getting bogged down in unnecessary details.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • A "hands-on" approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, addressing real-world practical problems on-site to improve plant performance.
  • Motivated self-starter willing to take on all aspects of projects relative to I&C systems.
  • Ability to mentor and train of other engineers and field technicians.
  • Strong PC skills including MS-office.
