The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Mechanic A performs all phases of repair and maintenance and demonstrates the required knowledge of safe use of equipment and tools and accurately read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams. In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, may be required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and work overtime. Provide basic knowledge in all areas and skills with a demonstrated proficiency in Preventive Maintenance and at least two skills (electrical/plumbing/carpentry).

Responsibilities

  • Duties include troubleshoot, repair, replace circuits using wire, raceway or conduit, junction boxes, receptacles, switches, motors and lighting, incandescent or fluorescent fixtures, ballasts, switches, sockets, and receptacles. Install cables, conduits and boxes. Test equipment and document tests.
  • Install, repair, and replace fixtures including faucets, drains, flushometers and valves.
  • Maintain, repair, replace domestic water piping. Measure, cut thread and fit pipe and tubing in the field. Braze/solder as needed. Repair/replace hot water or steam radiators, valves, thermostats, and pressure traps. Clear waste line stoppages using hand or power equipment.
  • Install small appliances, pumps, check valves and all plumbing materials associated with above.
  • Maintain grease traps.
  • Repair/maintain/install interior doors, related hardware, and additional items for building or room security. Install bathroom equipment, such as vanity, medicine cabinet, mirrors, and dispensers.
  • Repair/replacement of cabinets, furniture, and other wooden and hardware structure shelving. Replace/install floor and ceiling tiles. Work with sheetrock and/or plaster walls.
  • Patch, plaster, speckle, tape and paint walls.
  • Flash and repair sidewalks to cure unsafe conditions. Mix and apply paint, varnish, stain, lacquer, or enamel on smooth interior and exterior surface fixtures, ensuring all areas (floors, furniture, etc.) are protected.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of daily assignments and follow the work order process. Recommend products and equipment to be on assigned jobs as requested by a supervisor.
  • Maintain records to ensure routine compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Assist in evaluating new equipment for purchase.
  • Calculate the quantity of material needed and requisition supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
  • Satisfactory passing of applicable tests.
  • Three years of experience in trades and/or technical discipline or satisfactory completion of an approved training program or successful completion of a Mechanic Training Program.
  • Must have all applicable licenses and permits.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, follow written, oral, diagrammatical or scheduled forms; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instruction.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and move heavier objects with assisted devices.
  • Work near or with moving mechanical parts, chemical, and electrical equipment required.

Other Requirements

  • Employees hired after March 26, 1999, will be subject to a four-year wage progression in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Required to be Tuberculosis (TB) negative, submit to periodic TB testing, and a chest x-ray if a positive TB test is read.

  • According to Columbia University Medical Center policy, the finalist will be asked to submit for drug screening.
