Summary:
New York Institute of Technology is implementing Workday, a modern financial system and complementary HR/Payroll system. Full project kick-off date is January 2024 and will run with expectation of July 1, 2025, as the go-live date. This newly created position of Associate Controller for Operations is a dedicated backfill position to lead the ongoing accounting and financial reporting obligations of the Finance departments while the Controller and Assistant Controller assume major leadership roles in the implementation project. NYIT is seeking a seasoned professional with technical and operational experience in a wide variety of non-profit -- preferably higher ed -- financial reporting, treasury, budget, and grant and general accounting fields. Reporting to the Controller and Assistant Controller, the Associate Controller is an integral part of the Finance management team and will be responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations including oversight of general ledger, accounting and financial workflows. The Associate may also be called upon to assist in the implementation of the new system, including proposing and making new changes in policies and procedures as the project progresses.

This hybrid role will require three onsite work days. During the incumbent's initial training period, additional onsite work days may be required.

Responsibilities
    Participate as a key manager within the controller's office, providing leadership in accounting and finance daily operations, financial & tax reporting, audits, and any short-term projects as needed. Utilize backfill role to gain improved understanding of workflows and recommend better solutions for fulfillment of reporting and compliance obligations.
  • Serve as a university resource and expert on matters of higher ed accounting, internal controls, financial reporting and tax compliance, providing advice, direction and training to members of the community.
  • Respond to community questions on accounting and processing financial transactions and provide training on reporting capabilities as needed.
  • Review and document as needed existing accounting design and process flows for major reporting and analytical purposes. Identify strengths and weaknesses, and model new processes to diminish or eliminate weaknesses, while building and reinforcing strengths. Document all policies, procedures and systems related to financial reporting, transaction processing, and financial controls as structured within the new financial and HR systems.
  • Assist in testing of new accounting system functionality and post-implementation reviews of all processes and procedures to validate the coverage of essential internal controls. Under direction of Controller, evaluate open risks and develop procedures/practices and risk and assist with solutions to ensure compliance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • CPA certification is required.
  • MBA or other graduate level degree preferred.
  • Ten or more years' experience in non-profit financial accounting and/or related operations required; non-profit/higher education environment is preferred.
  • Experience with Workday or Oracle Financials is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • High level interpersonal skills, with ability to work and collaborate with diverse staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Previous management/supervisory experience and demonstrated effectiveness with staff development and team building.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, and strong proficiency with financial accounting software and reporting tools.

New York Tech considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate experience/expertise, education/training, key skills, geographic location, internal peer equity as well as market, organizational considerations and/or applicable collective bargaining agreement when extending an offer.

Minimum Salary
USD $125,000.00/Yr.
Maximum Salary
USD $150,000.00/Yr.
