Job Description

West Elm is seeking a passionate and innovative Baby/Kids Furniture Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Vice President of Design, you will play a crucial role in developing our line of children's furniture, ensuring our products meet all relevant safety standards.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with design teams to conceptualize and create new baby/kids' furniture pieces.
  • Develop detailed product specifications, considering safety standards, materials, and construction methods.
  • Ensure that technical specification given to our furniture vendors contain detailed technical guidance in all key production areas; such as, raw material selection, acceptable workmanship, joinery, finishing and hardware solution.
  • Work closely with manufacturing partners and overseas teams to assess high risk standards and resolve any engineering-related issues.
  • Continuously evaluate and optimize existing products for improved performance, costing, construction and customer satisfaction.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, market demands, and technological advancements in kids' furniture design.
  • Travel as needed for visiting manufacturers to review product and foster supplier relationships.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS or associate degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 4-5 years professional experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years in furniture technical development and/or engineering.
  • Emphasis on Juvenile wood furniture products such as cribs, bunk beds, bassinets etc.... a plus
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and furniture construction techniques.
  • Solid understanding of residential and contract furniture technical design, construction and finishing.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with drafting and 3D modeling a must (solidworks a plus)
  • Experience and understanding of ASTM and BIFMA standards is a plus.
  • Understanding of furniture packaging is a plus.

The expected starting pay range for this position is $99,000 - $120,000. Applicable pay ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. In addition to competitive pay, compensation may include a variety of other components like benefits, paid time off, merit, and bonus opportunities.
