Overview

Role overview: Bruker OST manufactures highly specialized, engineered metallic materials as a Tier 1 supplier to the healthcare industry. Most of our supply chain spend is with suppliers who themselves are producers of highly specialized, engineered metals. The Director of Supply Chain is responsible for leading the procurement, warehouse, and logistics teams, and working collaboratively with counterparts within the BEST group. The Director of Supply Chain will apply knowledge and expertise to drive the business in supplier strategy development, supply security, tender execution, contract negotiation, and performance evaluation.

The Director of Supply Chain will work within the BEST group to support centralized sourcing and procurement efforts. The Director of Supply Chain will also establish relationships with senior business leaders to ensure that supply chain activities are aligned with their objectives, and to enlist their support (and some level of their resources) in participating in supply base improvement efforts. This will include working with the internal stakeholder from initial need identification to final goods or service delivery to meet stakeholder needs. As a senior executive, the Director of Technology will also contribute to strategy development, financial models, and planning, and addressing other requirements of the business as needed.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Strategic

    Develop sourcing, procurement, warehousing, and logistics activities that support key business unit objectives.
  • Ensure the execution of business unit and group procurement and logistics strategies to ensure consistent and high-quality value delivery.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with strategic suppliers to assure cost, quality, and delivery targets are met.
  • Update procurement and logistics strategies based on changing market conditions.

Tactical

  • Creation and management of short-, mid-, and long-term goals and objectives
  • Conduct business review meetings with key stakeholders to assess risk, review future strategies, and identify potential cost down and improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure the execution of standards, controls, policies, procedures, and performance metrics to manage the acquisition, reporting, and forecasting of supplier spend.
  • Lead rigorous and objective contract negotiations with key internal stakeholders, legal department, and support groups.
  • Control spend and build a culture of long-term saving on procurement and logistics costs.
  • Establish and maintain supplier agreements with key suppliers.
  • Establish and maintain close and effective working relationships with other managers.
  • Leadership of cross-functional project teams across other business units, business functions, and initiatives

Staffing

  • Management and mentoring (via direct and dotted line reporting) of supply chain staff in (and across) sourcing, contracting, transactional purchasing, supplier management, warehousing and logistics, and miscellaneous internal procurement support activities.
  • Developing the skills and competencies of procurement staff, including training development and knowledge management capabilities

INDICATIVE PERFORMANCE MEASURES

Strategic

  • Evidence of strategic planning and implementation
  • Implementation of best practices in procurement and supplier management and logistics to support commercial and operational objectives.
  • Continuous improvement of supplier performance: delivery, quality, cost
  • Evidence of market intelligence capabilities within the key markets and suppliers to support strategy development purposes.

Tactical

  • Practicality and efficacy of proposals
  • Commonality of processes and components
  • Development, sustainability, and continuous improvement of benchmarks and scorecards to be used for supplier assessment and improvement.
  • Institute policies and procedures for collecting and reporting key supplier spend and total cost of ownership metrics to reduce overall cost and improve operational effectiveness.
  • Foresee alterations in the comparative negotiating ability of suppliers.
  • Expect unfavorable events through analysis of data and prepare control strategies accordingly.
  • Perform risk management for supply contracts and agreements.
  • Identification and realization of cost-saving and cost-reduction opportunities
  • Collaboration with key persons to ensure clarity of the specifications and expectations of the company.

  • Minimised staffing issues and maintain high morale.
Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience with purchasing and use of highly specialized, engineered materials.
  • Solid operational management and general business skills and savvy
  • Financially astute, able to assimilate detail and identify key issues quickly - understanding their impact on tactics and strategy.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislative and regulatory requirements, as well as understanding of standard contractual terms and conditions to mitigate legal risk
  • Knowledge of enterprise risk management and business continuity planning
  • Strategic mindset and problem-solving skills
  • Analytical mindset, but also creativity to seek, encourage and find non-traditional approaches
  • Industry knowledge in terms of broad industry dynamics on both the buy- and sell-sides, but also the internal knowledge and "language of the business"
  • Aptitude in decision-making and working with numbers
  • Development and performance management through teams and individuals, particularly within a matrixed organization.
  • Adept negotiator, internally & externally. Strong negotiation skills to use for large commercial deals.
  • Talent in networking (evidence of establishing credibility is required)

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bruker OST manufactures highly specialized, engineered metallic materials as a Tier 1 supplier to the healthcare industry. Most of our supply chain spend is with suppliers who themselves are producers of highly specialized, engineered metals. It is anticipated that to be effective in this role, a minimum of a Master's degree, and preferably a Ph.D., in a discipline such as metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or related areas of technical specialization, is required. An MBA would also be an asset.
  • For this senior role, at least 10 years of senior supply management, finance, or operational management experience would be expected. (This would be typical, although this is dependant on the scope of previous jobs and the skills/education of the candidate.)
  • Alternatively, or in addition to supply chain, finance, and/or operations experience, a successful candidate could also come from the "sell-side" of a large business segment (i.e., someone who was on "the other side of the negotiating table").
  • A proven track record of delivering large savings and other value to large swaths of spend.
  • Experience working in technical manufacturing environment (engineering or science).
  • Exposure to, awareness of, and empathy with other cultures, diversity, and business environments.
  • Willingness to travel globally, occasionally to sometimes often.
