The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Senior Human Resources & Faculty Affairs Generalist will perform human resources-related duties at an independent professional level, covering various functional areas such as employee relations, training, employment, labor relations, and affirmative action and employment equity programs. In addition, you will be the lead administrative person involved in the onboarding process, collaborating with partners across the organization, including the Office of Faculty Affairs, the Human Resources office, Payroll, International and Immigration Affairs, and the Medical Staff Office at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Managers and Directors to develop and define best practices within the Medicine HR core team.
  • Assist in training other HR/FA team members by identifying appropriate resources and assisting with problem-solving.
  • Contribute to the development of department communications for routine HR/FA processes and new initiatives.
  • Provide regular updates to HR/FA Managers and/or Directors on request status and attend meetings to review the status of HR/FA transactions.
  • Provide vacation and time-off coverage, including short-term or extended assignments.

Recruitment:

  • Assist with the recruitment of staff by posting positions on Columbia's job site (Talentlink and Interfolio) and relevant external advertising sources.
  • Aid departments in creating job descriptions for posting.
  • Review applications and conduct interviews to assess applicants' experience in relation to specific job-related requirements.

Onboarding:

  • Take responsibility for onboarding CU and Service Corp staff, faculty (clinical and researchers), and students. This includes preparing offer letters, initiating pre-hire background checks, managing the I-9 process, scheduling welcome programs and medical surveillance appointments, and creating UNIs for systems and email access.
  • Work with the Medical Staff Office to ensure a smooth credentialing process for new faculty and nurses, collecting vital documents such as licenses and board certifications.
  • Maintain communication with new hires and departments to ensure a seamless onboarding experience.
  • Initiate and process template-based hires in Peoplesoft and/or nominations, ensuring accurate collection and processing of information through PAC.
  • Process all short-term visitors and students using JIRA.

Promotions and Reappointments:

  • Manage the annual reappointment processes, collaborating with colleagues in the department to meet deadlines.

Employee Retention and Engagement:

  • Conduct exit interviews, analyze data, and provide recommendations to the management team for corrective action and continuous improvement.
  • Proactively address employee relations issues, including employee complaints, harassment allegations, and civil rights complaints.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in training, and /or experience plus a minimum of three years related experience.
  • Resourceful, organized, detail-oriented, and task-oriented, with the ability to establish priorities and follow up on multiple issues in a time-sensitive manner.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and demonstrate sound independent judgment.
  • Exemplify professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, firmness, and collaboration when interacting with individuals at all levels.
  • Strong analytical and tenacious problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases, and advanced spreadsheet skills.
  • Quick acquisition of knowledge regarding University policies, procedures, and systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • Familiarity with university policies, procedures, and systems.

Other Requirements

  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
