POSITION: Senior Data Product Manager

REPORTING TO:

Director of Product Management

SCHEDULE

35-hour work week, Monday through Friday

LOCATION

Flexible. In-person attendance is expected during our annual, weeklong all-staff summit. Additionally, participation for in-person meetings is expected at least once per year for most employees, and at least once per quarter for senior leaders.

COMPENSATION

$120,000 - $150,000 (this range is for the NYC area and will be adjusted for other localities; additionally, factors like skills and experience will be considered)

POSITION SUMMARY

Candid actively collects and stores decades of nonprofit data from many sources to make comprehensive data on philanthropy accessible to nonprofits, foundations, technology providers, researchers and more. The senior data product manager will lead the strategic direction and product roadmap for this data at Candid, prioritizing data collection that drives user engagement, retention, and differentiated value to the philanthropic sector.

They will treat data as a product, ensuring that the quality, quantity, and coverage of Candid's data is aligned and validated by user needs and impact on the sector. They will identify, prioritize, and advocate for data requirements that continuously improve the data, working collaboratively with many teams across the organization on implementation like data discovery, data architecture, data operations, data science, product management, growth and more.

The senior data product manager's vision, roadmap and release schedule are critical to the overall success of Candid's products as this data fuels all Candid's products including Candid's web tools, APIs, and data sets.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Inform Candid's data strategy by collecting user feedback, market pain points, competitive analysis, stakeholder feedback and strategic value of existing and future data needs.
  • Discover new data needs across the market and ensure Candid's data evolves with the sector, understanding the market size opportunity it generates.
  • Map the different data needs of personas, products, and partnerships to articulate the user value of each data element.
  • Define and prioritize data goals that align with organization key results, product vision and data strategy.
  • Create and maintain a data product roadmap in alignment with product managers and data teams.
  • Work with data architecture early in requirements to define functional and nonfunctional requirements.
  • Create requirements for data projects and align with stakeholders to build a release plan.
  • Enable data teams to implement requirements using epics and user stories.
  • Be the product owner for Candid's data including candid's taxonomy, platform set criteria and real-time data sourcing requirements.
  • Collaborate with data teams to create, own, and maintain external data dashboards.
  • User acceptance test data improvements in collaboration with data teams.
  • Create external data changelog when improvements are made.
  • Submit bugs to data teams and inform priorities for remediation.
  • Monitor and provide feedback on key data quality and coverage metrics.
  • Respond to and generate action plans to customer requests on data when needed.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts on data literacy content.
  • Inform product teams and stakeholders on decisions being made about data lifecycle improvements.
  • Collaborate with solutions engineering to enable sales and marketing by articulating key value propositions of data.
  • Be a subject matter expert in Candid's data.
REQUIREMENTS
  • College degree strongly preferred in computer science, mathematics, business management, engineering, or other technical field; equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • 5-7 years of experience managing data products or data pipelines.
  • 3-4 years of experience working in philanthropy as a subject matter expert in nonprofit data or has experience working on data initiatives serving nonprofits, foundations, businesses, or researchers supporting philanthropy.
  • Experience building platform products that support many other product teams.
  • Experience identifying and partnering with vendors.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum.
  • Technical expert in SQL, ETL processes, Tableau, Snowflake, and/or other relational databases or data visualization tools.
  • Loves data and can analyze patterns and trends to make effective business decisions.
  • Can generate requirements from many - often competing - sources.
  • Familiar with user discovery and research techniques.
  • Strong empathy with users from various backgrounds and levels of expertise.
  • Servant leader who empowers teams that do not directly report to them.
  • Independent with a high level of initiative and ownership.
  • Diligent listener and communicator. Ability to adapt approach based on audience and organizational changes.
  • Ability to gain buy in from stakeholder groups on initiatives.
  • Enthusiasm to coordinate efforts across diverse functional groups.
  • Willingness to perform other duties and special projects as needed/requested.
  • Sensitivity and respect for racial, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural differences.
