The Manager, Ambulatory Pharmacy is responsible for managing overall successful operation of the assigned Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) retail pharmacies. Establishes and monitors departmental policies and procedures consistent with Federal and State Pharmacy Laws, and ensures ambulatory pharmacy services and activities are carried out to meet the goals and standards of the medical center's policies and procedures and that they are consistent with the strategic priorities of the health system. Participates in hiring, drafting of job descriptions and assignment of job responsibilities as needed.

Ensures ambulatory pharmacy team members are highly engaged and support the goals of the pharmacy and assumes responsibility for maintaining the highest levels of safe pharmacy operation and staff productivity and participates in establishing and measuring job performance goals and metrics. Represents the Ambulatory Pharmacy department in hospital management meetings and participates in any hospital or system level committees where representation may be needed.

Responsible for the preparation of annual department budgets, adherence to same and any deviations therefrom. Responsible for the overall successful financial operations of the pharmacies including inventory control, narcotic drug controls, third party insurance contracts and that reporting to site and corporate finance departments are accurate. Works collaboratively with other HMH Ambulatory Pharmacy Site Managers in the best interest of the health system.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager of Ambulatory Pharmacy at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Assists Administrator of Pharmacy with:
a. Operational planning and ensuring Pharmacy services are meet patient/provider needs.
b. Meeting all regulatory, accreditation and certification requirements.
c. Maintaining control and security of medication products utilized within the organization.
d. Evaluation and implementation of new technology that will be used by the department.
e. Policy and procedure development, implementation, review and revision.
f. Oversee functionality, maintenance and system upgrades automated compounding/filling equipment, pharmacy dispensing, and workflow software's.
2. Manages daily operations of department and keeps Administrator of Pharmacy apprised of any significant issues.
3. Schedules Pharmacy staff and responsible for the payroll function within the Pharmacy Department.
4. Works with IT Department to coordinate the installation, training for and use of technology within the department.
5. Manage the activities and performance of pharmacists, technicians, couriers, clerks, and other pharmacy personnel. Ensure adequate staffing is present to fulfill the needs of the pharmacy.
6. Ensure accurate records of all prescription medication received and dispensed are maintained.
7. Ensure policies are in place regarding accurate dispensing and labeling of prescriptions and that such policies are followed.
8. Ensure that security of the prescription area and its contents are maintained at all times, including the restriction of persons unauthorized by the Pharmacist on duty from being present in the prescription area while the pharmacist is temporarily absent within the premises and the reporting of any thefts and/or diversions of controlled substances are reported upon discovery to the Office of Drug Control and the Drug Enforcement Administration pursuant to Federal and State requirements.
9. Complies with all state and federal regulations and Medical Center and policies and procedures relating to drug dispensing including appropriate handling of drug products, adherence to security procedures, and completion of necessary documentation. This includes appropriate control and dispensing of controlled dangerous substances and drugs.
10. Ensure only pharmacists and interns or externs under immediate personal supervision provide professional consultation with patients and physicians.
11. Ensure only pharmacists, interns or externs, accept telephone prescriptions and only pharmacists, interns, or externs, or pharmacy technicians consistent with state requirements accept renewal authorizations.
12. Maintain controls to not allow misbranded, deteriorated, adulterated, improperly stored or outdated drugs or any drugs marked 'sample' or with any like designation or meaning are dispensed or present in the active stock in the pharmacy.
13. Ensures the prescription area is maintained in an orderly and sanitary manner.
14. Ensures that the pharmacy and all pharmacy personnel comply with all Federal and State statutes, rules, and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy.
15. Manage the pharmacy budget and all aspects related to the financial program.
16. Maintains safety-integrity-professionalism of pharmacy at all times.
17. Employs principles of safe medication practice as dictated by departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
18. Reviews and dispenses medication prescriptions and clarifies any and all potential problems with prescriptions.
19. Monitors patient drug therapy regimens for all allergies, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, and potential adverse reactions.
20. Oversees activities of ancillary personal (Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Clerks, Liaisons and Cashiers). Conducts periodic staff meetings.
21. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs. Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
22. Assures confidentiality of patient records.
23. Consistently strives to promote great customer service in all aspects of the job.
24. Assume Pharmacist responsibilities as needed.
25. Ensure that all assigned training and competencies are completed by pharmacy personnel.
26. Assure acquisition and renewal of all pharmacy licenses and certifications. Conduct annual review of staff's licenses.
27. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.) This process includes communicating with the patient, parent and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
28. Oversees preparation of and adherence to annual departmental budget goals.
29. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
30. Adheres to HMH's Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Bachelor of Science or PharmD from an accredited College of Pharmacy
2. Minimum of 3 years' experience and working knowledge of retail/ambulatory pharmacy.
3. Evidence of written communication skills via academic or work-related publications or presentations.
4. Working knowledge of New Jersey drug laws.
5. Understanding of, and experience with, ambulatory pharmacy technology (computers, workflow etc.).

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Previous pharmacy management experience.
2. General computer competency including word process and spreadsheet utilities.
3. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to be effectively understood in day-to-day functions and when training or orienting employees.
4. Negotiation and collaborative judgment to reach appropriate compromise in conflict resolution.
5. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an orientation towards customer service.
6. Basic computer skills needed.
7. Ability to prioritize and perform responsibilities accurately with attention to detail.
8. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload.
9. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
10. Financial management skills.


Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. Valid New Jersey Pharmacist License.
