Overview
The Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies (formerly Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies) is undergoing dynamic and transformative growth. The Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies is one of the nation's leading tobacco focused research centers and its faculty have received over $50 million in extramural funding over the past two decades. The Institute's efforts are focused on their mission of reducing and ultimately eliminating, tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.

Five Centers or Programs currently operate at the Institute including a Tobacco Center for Regulatory Science, the Center of Excellence for Rapid Surveillance of Tobacco, the Tobacco Dependence Program, a Tobacco Industry Marketing Program, and a Tobacco Control Law & Policy Resource Center.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Student Assistant for the Rutgers Institute for Nicotine & Tobacco Studies at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), located in New Brunswick, NJ.

Under direction of the Associate Professor, the Student Assistant will perform data management for various research studies in the Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies. Provides administrative and program support to the Project Director, Principal Investigator, faculty, and other professional staff. There is opportunity to co-author publications. Research projects include: (1) identifying, quantifying, and describing promotional practices of companies across various industries and determining how such practices affect offline health-related behaviors; (2) examining user experiences with popular new tobacco products to understand their appeal, and the social and environmental characteristics surrounding their use; (3) identifying the extent of unsubstantiated health claims (or misinformation) pertaining to substances like nicotine, cannabis, and products like electronic cigarettes.

Duties will include:
  • Assist in developing codebook for content analysis.
  • Apply code book in content analysis with image-based and/or audio-visual based, and/or text-based data.
  • Review and edit data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.

  • Must be a student enrolled at Rutgers University with a focus on public health sciences or social sciences.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with primary data collection or with tobacco control and training in research methods preferred.
  • Preference for graduate student, and /or 1-2 years of experience with conducting public health-related research work
