Job Description
Summary

Provides legal advice/counsel to all NYPA's business and functional areas.Researches, analyzes, and interprets proposed and existing laws, statutes, and regulations. Identifies, monitors, and addresses issues of legal risk. Informs and contributes to the structuring, drafting, negotiating and/or approval of legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies and other documents. May represent NYPA during litigation, arbitration, mediation or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities. Specialties may include but are not limited to Real Estate, Contract Management, Employment Law, Governmental/Regulatory Affairs and Litigation.#LI-CJ1

Responsibilities
  • Work under thedirection ofan Assistant General Counsel, or an assigned senior level attorney, to develop a deeper understanding of NYPA's and its subsidiaries' Business Units and their respective operations
  • Develop a deeper understanding of NYPA's and its subsidiaries' enabling legislation and related statutes contained in the Public Authorities Law along with other laws, rules, regulations and Executive Ordersimpacting NYPA's and its subsidiaries' business activities as well as internal governance and compliance programs
  • Attend meetings with senior level attorneys and assist in the presentation of legal analyses to business unit clients
  • Research legal issues and draft opinions or memoranda analyzing potential impacts on NYPA's and its subsidiaries' programs and related business activities
  • Develop relationships with business unit clients and gain a deeper understanding of their programmatic legal needs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to thoroughly and independently conduct legal research on progressively complex issues
  • Ability to analyze issues more critically and identify obstacles or problems for NYPA operations
  • Ability to work more independently on various issues/multi-tasking
  • Ability to achieve positive working relationships with business unit clients
  • Develop working-level oral and written communication skills
  • Develop legal expertise in an area germane to NYPA's business operations
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Juris Doctor Degree, admission to the New York State Bar and admitted to practice in New York State and Federal courts is required
  • Minimum 2 years of legal experience
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas preferred: of law relevant to NYPA, such as energy, regulatory, litigation, commercial and finance, and employment
  • Experience in utility industry preferred
Physical Requirements

Up to 25% travel primarily within NY State

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
