Position Description

The Optical Engineer will use their practical technical skills and manufacturing know-how to develop new, and improve existing, optical gyroscope-based Inertial Measurement Units, their subassemblies, and components. In addition, they will help develop new optical characterization stations and techniques to further the understanding of core technologies around these devices.

Required Skills

Essential Functions

  • Apply expertise in fiber optics, free-space optics, and laser cavity design to support existing and new projects related to optical gyroscope-based inertial measurement units (IMUs), at the system, subassembly, and component levels.
  • Work hands-on to build new optical workstations for the characterization of laser and fiber-optic gyroscopes.
  • Work with vendors to obtain subassemblies and components for use in existing and new products.
  • Perform quantitative analysis on performance test data to guide calibration & test processes, manufacturing, and design improvements.
  • Perform requirements flow down to translate internal and customer system needs into IMU, subassembly, and component specifications and verification methods for use internally and with vendors.
  • Support troubleshooting of both developmental and production products.

Critical Competencies

  • Capable of working independently within a cross-functional team of engineers and technicians.
  • Able to execute in all phases of development: concept, requirements, design, component integration, verification, manufacturing, and product support.
  • Capable of working collaboratively with project engineers and program managers to interface with both commercial and military customers for technical definition and execution aspects of programs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills required. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Familiarity with CAD, computational software and optics/photonics modeling software (e.g., Zemax, Lumerical) a plus.
Required Experience

General Requirements

* BS degree in Optical Engineering or a related Science/Engineering discipline from an accredited educational institution

* 5+ years of hands-on experience with one or more of the following: gas lasers, plasma physics, fiber optics, photonic integrated circuits, laser or fiber-optic gyroscopes, optical metrology.

* Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams, both technical and business related

* Experience in planning and tracking tasks with a commitment to meet schedule and budget objectives

* Experience supporting reliability design and testing

* Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles
