Job Description:

The Fine Arts department is recruiting a pool of applicants for day and evening adjunct teaching courses in the area of Painting and Drawing. Successful candidates will possess the ability to share extensive knowledge of art history and contemporary practices, approaches, and movements in art. Specialization in a cross-cultural approach to curriculum development is encouraged. Strong candidates will foster an inclusive classroom learning environment with nondiscriminatory teaching methods towards learning difference, race, ethnicity, gender expression, sexuality, physical ability, socioeconomic, or immigration status.

We seek artists and educators with expertise across 2D mediums of painting and drawing. Required skill sets are specific to the individual course to be filled on an as needed basis.

Our Fine Arts major area courses require a range of skill sets (determined per class) that may include:

  • Knowledge of two-dimensional design concepts with training in the various materials and techniques of drawing and painting and the ability to teach a strong foundation of fundamental 2D concepts.
  • Knowledge of structural drawing concepts and ability to teach the fundamental principles and materials used in drawing from direct observation (not photo sourced) for our foundation level courses.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of oil painting is required along with the ability to teach at the introductory level using a perceptual approach to still life and the figure. Ability to teach color mixing, paint application, and compositional strategies from direct observation (not photo sourced) is essential.
  • Working knowledge of drawing the human figure, expanding on the fundamentals of foundation drawing to include the use of color, materials experimentation, exploration of scale and compositional strategies.
  • Ability to teach sustained drawing using mixed media and development of a more complex relationship between the figure and space,
  • The ability to teach a synthesis of approaches (observation, invention, abstraction, process based) and methods to guide students in their investigation of scale, material, content, and process.
  • Ability to articulate a contemporary approach to sculpture and assist students in the development of concept and form.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Provide guidance, input and assistance to students in their painting and drawing projects.
  • Encourage creativity and critical thinking while fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Submit grades for assignments, projects and coursework promptly and accurately.
  • Maintain attendance, and organized records of student performance and progress throughout the course.
  • Fulfill administrative responsibilities, including office hours and participation in department meetings and committees as required.
  • Ensure a safe community learning environment including the proper use of artists' materials and equipment within the classroom/studio.

Adjunct instructors deliver relevant course material, assess student performance, provide guidance and assistance to students both in and out of the classroom, and submit grades in a timely manner. Course descriptions are available online for and .

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and/or Master of Fine Arts degree or equivalent.
  • At least one year teaching experience at the college level.
  • Ability to instruct and ensure the safe use of materials and successfully communicate conceptual ideas for class projects through lecture and visual presentations.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • The ideal candidate will have comprehensive expertise in the use of painting and drawing concepts, processes, and materials.
  • Student work must reflect strong understanding of structural form beyond image making.
  • Effectively teach visual concepts and instruct and ensure the safely use tools and the studio.
  • Ability to communicate the historical, cultural, and theoretical contexts and contemporary painting and drawing practices through lecture and visual presentations.
  • The ideal candidate must have the ability to write a syllabus, teach learning outcomes as listed in the course outline (provided), deliver relevant course materials with lectures and demonstrations, provide guidance, input, and assistance to students, assess student performance, and submit grades in a timely manner.
  • Effectively communicate and work with classroom technicians.


Additional Information:

This is a part-time position, adjunct teaching position beginning in Fall 2024. Review of applications will commence immediately and continue until the position is filled.
