Job Description:

The Staff Scientist will be responsible for coordinating and conducting the ecological research and restoration activities conducted by the Center for Environmental Studies at RVCC. Projects involve working with lead faculty, student interns, and community partners to conduct forest ecology research on the effects of prescribed burning on native and invasive vegetation in central and northern New Jersey and related projects in forest ecology and restoration. The position is a grant-funded, full-time position for two years, with possible renewal contingent upon funding.

Essential Duties:

Responsibilities include assisting the Center for Environmental Studies co-directors, staff and RVCC administration with all aspects of project implementation, including:

  • Coordinating with community partners
  • Collection of soil and vegetation field data
  • Training and coordination of student interns
  • Data entry, analysis, and reporting
  • Creating and updating outreach content in web, print and other formats
  • Assistance with public and scientific presentations
  • Development of curriculum, data sheets, and other support materials


Requirements:

A.S. in Ecology, Natural Resources or related fields, or an A.S./A.A. in Environmental Science/Studies and a minimum of three years of part-time experience in ecological field research and restoration.

A valid NJ Driver's License and means of personal transportation.

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Sway, ArcCollector, and Adobe Creative Cloud software.

Ability to work safely outdoors in remote and/or physically challenging conditions, including hot/cold/wet conditions, muddy/rocky/uneven terrain, and late nights and/or weekends when necessary.

Familiarity with RVCC-CES forest ecology research, study sites, and field data collection protocols

Demonstrated proficiency in plant species identification in NJ.

Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication, interpersonal relations, data management and analysis, and print and web material development.
