PURPOSE

The Purpose of this role is to lead the day to day management of transactional legal work at Conde Nast. This will include negotiating and advising on major transactions, leading on support to the Commercial, Consumer, Production and Procurement teams, while overseeing and developing the legal teams providing advice to these business units and partnering with the Head of Legal Operations to proactively identify the need for Legal Operations solutions.

Consumer Revenue

Provide legal support to our Consumer business and proactively build connections and influence across the senior Consumer team. Assist on a range of global deals and issues in the Consumer space.

Commercial Revenue Revenue

Support US and global revenue transactions, acting as a point of escalation for major transactions, across Ad sales, Consumer sales, Consumer regulatory, Events, Social as requested by the Deputy GC and in-market Revenue & Consumer lawyers. Assist the Deputy GC and in market counsel with the development of appropriate service levels to the Revenue teams.

Procurement

Oversee and develop delivery of procurement advice and service to the global procurement team, including development of processes, best practices and workflows.

Corporate

Oversee delivery of day-to-day corporate and company secretarial advice to the Finance, Real Estate and Executive Leadership teams.

Content Transactions

Oversee and be responsible for the drafting and negotiation of production related agreements, contributor agreements and talent agreements and provide business-oriented legal guidance for publishing, film and television, digital video, podcasts and other inbound licensing across the US and international markets.

Commercial & Entertainment Team

Support the Deputy General Counsel with the development of the Commercial & Entertainment team. This will including working together on:

  • Strategic priorities and goals for each year
  • The development and implementation of the annual budget
  • Review and agree on outside counsel
  • Location Strategy
  • Legal & Policy Operations Strategy
  • Interactions with Shareholder, Executive Leadership Team and other key internal stakeholders

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Legally qualified in the U.S. with 10+ years relevant experience.
  • Strong experience in sales and marketing law gained either in private practice or in an in-house role in a similar sector to CN, including a thorough knowledge of applicable marketing codes and best practice;
  • Background in US sales and commercial law, including an awareness of emerging trends, regulation and best practice in offline and online advertising, social media and influencers.
  • Familiarity with content production transactions and ability to supervise advice to publishing, video and podcast teams.
  • Ability to present legal advice in a pragmatic, problem solving and commercial fashion.
  • Confident, self starter who welcomes the opportunity presented by being the first holder of this role.
  • Positive "can do" attitude and willingness to work flexibly and as part of a new and evolving team that is itself operating in a business and sector going through change.
  • Significant legal experience gained in an in-house environment at a senior level
  • Strong management experience and demonstrated ability to shape and lead international teams.
  • Experience of delivering legal services in a multinational corporation.
  • Experience of working in a matrix reporting environment.
  • Familiarity with Legal Operations, Technology and Process improvement.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $263,250 - $295,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.

This role will report to the Deputy General Counsel
