Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
The Director of Research Laboratory Operations and Safety will report directly to the VC DORED and is responsible for providing strategic leadership and administration of all N.C. A&T research laboratories, both on and off campus.

The Director oversees laboratory operations, training, safety, quality control, and maintenance.

The Director will promote a professional practice research laboratory environment and develop and maintain collegial and collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders across the institution to positively impact the business of research laboratory operations.

The Director will serve as the DORED representative on the University Space Committee and make recommendations regarding the commissioning, decommissioning, and recommissioning of research laboratory space.

The Director does not have responsibility for teaching laboratories or other academic spaces, but may provide council to the Space Committee as needed regarding these spaces.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Division of Research and Economic Development (DORED) is designated as the official unit to administer and manage sponsored program activities at North Carolina A&T State University.

In addition to providing administrative oversight for all sponsored programs, the Division performs comprehensive pre-award and post-award functions to include identifying and publicizing funding opportunity information, coordinating the proposal review and authorization process, interacting with external agencies on behalf of the University, processing grant and contract award documents, administering sponsored projects from start-up through closeout, administering research compliance, and preparing and disseminating reports of sponsored program activity.

The Division interfaces with other administrative support units such as Academic Affairs, Legal Affairs, Grants and Contracts Accounting, Property Management, Computer Information Technology, Purchasing, and Human Resources.

This new unit within DORED will be responsible for research laboratory operations.
Minimum Requirements
Master's degree in relevant science field such as Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science, or Systems Engineering, Facility Operations and/or Maintenance from an accredited institution required.

Strong technical knowledge of laboratory equipment, maintenance and installation oversight for laboratory.

Combination of laboratory administration experience with oversight of operations, procedures and compliance totaling more than 5 years in science, engineering or technical areas.

Experience with laboratory safety and operations and oversight of people working in laboratories to ensure compliance for procedures and operations.

U.S. Citizenship is required due to laboratory security issues
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
PhD in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution.
Required License or Certification
