Job Summary

UT Southwestern is in search of a skilled and experienced Senior Carpenter for their Carpentry department. Works under minimal supervision to provide advanced journeyman level skills in performance of carpentry work.

Work Location: Dallas Campus; assist other UT Southwestern campuses when necessary.

Shift Requirement: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM

Minimum Experience and Education Requirements
  • Requires graduation from high school, GED, or vocational school.
  • Requires five (5) years skilled or journeyman level work experience as a carpenter in a commercial, institution, or healthcare setting; knowledge of door hardware, proficiency in the use of large power tools (ex: table saw, circular saw, router, miter saw, etc.).
  • Mechanically inclined; measure, cut and installation with accuracy.
  • An active State of Texas driver license.
Preferred Experience and Education
  • Journeyman Carpenter License or Training Verification Card.
  • Active holder of OSHA Safety and Forklift Operator certifications.
  • Commercial door installation and adjustment experience.
  • Cabinet installation experience.
  • Commercial ceiling installation experience.
  • Read and understand building plans.
  • Proficient with large cabinet shop equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Work requires mechanically inclined skills.
  • Work requires building construction experience.
  • Work requires basic computer skills (email, etc.)
  • Work requires the ability to read and write English clearly.
  • Work requires the ability to measure, cut, and install drywall with accuracy.
  • Work requires the ability to use hand and power tools such as planers, saws, jointers, drills, blueprints, and other tools common to carpentry trade.
  • Work requires proficiency in all phases of work performed.
  • Work requires alertness and careful attention to avoid serious injury to self and others.
  • Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.

Job Duties
  • Performs carpentry work involved in areas of construction, alteration, maintenance and repair of building structures, components, and systems.
  • Designs and builds tables, doors, shelves, bookcases, and a wide variety of specialized fabrications.
  • Build metal studs, sheet rock walls, install metal door jambs, window frames, ceilings and various articles constructed of wood and/or metal.
  • Acts as a Lead to employees and addresses peers and directs workflow in the supervisor's absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed primarily in the laboratory, general office, or outside area.
  • Working conditions occasionally involve exposure to one or more disagreeable elements, such as dust, dirt, lifting, and carrying ladders and heavy toolboxes, etc.
  • Working conditions also involve the need to work frequently in confined spaces.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.
